About the Organization

  • Constructing Our Future's mission is to provide formerly incarcerated women with the foundation they need to successfully rebuild their lives and become thriving members of our community.

    • Our Core Purpose: Our vision is that previously incarcerated women leaving prison who have a strong desire to restart their lives need to have a home base where they feel supported and welcomed back to the community and to have a path to permanent housing and sustainable employment.

    • What We Believe: We believe that every woman deserves a second chance and the opportunity to transform her life. A clear new beginning provides hope. A clear path with the love and support of new friends and mentors lead the way. We understand that successful reintegration requires more than just basic services - it requires genuine community support and belief in each woman's potential.

    • Our Approach: Professional training and community caring combined with a network of support enables our participating women to succeed.  We focus on creating an environment for nurturing and growth through new connections.

    • Why We're Uniquely Positioned: Constructing Our Future was created and continues to be led by previously incarcerated women.  This lived experience allows us to understand the challenges our participants face and provide authentic, effective support. Many of our volunteers and board members have successfully experienced reintegration themselves, and know the challenges.

    • Our Ultimate Goal: We work toward a future where formerly incarcerated women are not defined by their past but empowered to create new futures filled with stability, dignity, and hope. We envision a community where these women are welcomed, supported, and recognized for their strength and potential to contribute positively to society.

  • Constructing Our Future is a non-profit organization founded and led by formerly incarcerated women based in Indianapolis, Indiana.  The organization was created and continues to be led by previously incarcerated women.

    • The Founding Story: A group of women from the Indiana Women's Prison participated in a public policy class to talk about life after prison and what they would need to be successful. Looking toward the future and the implied promise from Article 1, Section 18 of the Indiana Constitution that, upon their release, they will be reintegrated into society as full citizens, these ladies developed a program that they took all the way through implementation.

    • Our Founding Philosophy: The organization was born from the recognition that formerly incarcerated women themselves are the best equipped to understand the challenges of reintegration and design effective solutions. This peer-led approach ensures that our programs are grounded in real experience and authentic understanding of what women need to succeed.

    • Leadership Continuity: What makes Constructing Our Future unique is that it has maintained its founding principle of being led by women who have lived the experience of incarceration and successful reintegration. This leadership structure ensures that our programs remain relevant, effective, and truly responsive to the needs of the women we serve.

    • Constitutional Foundation: Our founders were inspired by the promise in Indiana's Constitution that people leaving prison would be reintegrated as full citizens, and they took action to make that promise a reality through practical, community-based support.escription text goes here

Many of our volunteers and board members have successfully experienced reintegration themselves, and know the challenges.

    • Born from the Inside Out: A group of women from the Indiana Women's Prison participated in a public policy class to talk about life after prison and what they would need to be successful... these ladies developed a program that they took all the way through implementation. Our program wasn't designed by outsiders looking in - it was created by women who understood exactly what was needed because they had lived it.

    • Peer-to-Peer Support Model: Because our leadership and many volunteers have successfully navigated reintegration, we offer authentic peer support that goes beyond professional services. Our participants connect with women who truly understand their struggles and can offer hope through their own success stories.

    • Community-Centered Approach: We focus on creating a home base where they feel supported and welcomed back to the community rather than just providing services. Through new connections we provide an environment for nurturing and growth.

    • Holistic Integration: Professional training and community caring combined with a network of support enables our participating women to succeed. We don't just address immediate needs - we build lasting community connections and support systems.

    • Constitutional Foundation: Our founders were inspired by Article 1, Section 18 of the Indiana Constitution that, upon their release, they will be reintegrated into society as full citizens, giving our work a deeper legal and moral foundation.

This lived experience leadership creates trust, authenticity, and effectiveness that sets us apart from programs designed by those who haven't experienced incarceration themselves.Description text goes here

  • Constructing Our Future is based in Indianapolis, Indiana, and serves formerly incarcerated women in Indiana.

    • Primary Service Area: We are headquartered in Indianapolis and primarily serve women throughout Indiana who are transitioning back into their communities after incarceration. Our central location in Indianapolis allows us to reach women across the state while maintaining strong connections to local resources and support networks.

    • Statewide Impact: While based in Indianapolis, our services extend throughout Indiana to ensure that women in rural and urban areas alike have access to the support they need for successful reintegration. We understand that reentry challenges exist across the entire state, not just in metropolitan areas.

    • Local Community Focus: Our Indianapolis base allows us to build deep relationships with local employers, housing providers, healthcare systems, and other community partners who are essential to our participants' success. These local connections are crucial for creating the "home base" environment that our participants need.

    • Expanding Our Reach: As we grow, we continue to explore ways to serve more women across Indiana while maintaining the quality and personal touch that makes our program effective. We work with partner organizations and community groups throughout the state to extend our impact.

    • Why Geography Matters: Successful reintegration depends heavily on local community support, employment opportunities, and housing resources. By focusing on Indiana, we can build the deep community partnerships and local knowledge necessary to truly help women establish roots and succeed in their home communities.

If you're located outside of Indiana but interested in our model, we're happy to share information about how similar programs might be developed in other states.

  • We are proud of the impact we've made in the lives of formerly incarcerated women since our founding, and we track our reach through both direct program participants and the broader community connections we've facilitated.

    • Our Growing Impact: Since our establishment, we have served hundreds of women through our various programs and services. This includes women who have participated in our full reintegration program as well as those who have accessed specific services like housing assistance, employment support, or participated in our community events and workshops.

    • Different Levels of Support: Our impact extends beyond formal program enrollment to include:

    1. Women who have participated in our full comprehensive program

    2. Those who have accessed specific services like job placement or housing assistance

    3. Community members who have attended our educational events and workshops

    4. Women who have received emergency support during crisis situations

    5. Participants in our peer support groups and mentorship programs

    • Measuring Success Over Time: We track not just the number of women served, but their long-term outcomes - employment retention, housing stability, successful completion of supervision requirements, and their continued growth and community involvement.

    • Ripple Effect: Our impact extends to the families and children of the women we serve, creating positive change that reaches across generations and breaks cycles of incarceration.

    • Current Data: For the most up-to-date statistics on the number of women served and specific outcome data, please refer to our latest annual report or contact us directly. We're committed to transparency about our impact and are always happy to share detailed information about our reach and effectiveness.

The exact number continues to grow as we expand our services and strengthen our community partnerships.

  • No, there is no cost for our services. We are supported by our partners who believe in our mission of helping formerly incarcerated women successfully reintegrate into their communities. What's Included at No Cost

    • All housing assistance and support services

    • Mentorship and peer support programs

    • Educational workshops and life skills training

    • Emergency assistance with basic needs

    • Transportation support when available

    • Community events and social activities

Why We Don't Charge: We know that women leaving incarceration often face significant financial challenges. Many have limited savings, difficulty finding employment, and overwhelming expenses as they rebuild their lives. Charging for services would create another barrier to success, which goes against our core mission.

How We Can Afford This: Our community partners, donors, volunteers, and grant funders make it possible for us to provide comprehensive services without cost to participants. This support reflects our community's commitment to second chances and successful reintegration.

Our Promise: You will never be asked to pay for services, turned away due to inability to pay, or have services reduced because of financial constraints. Our focus is entirely on helping you succeed, not on collecting fees.

Your Investment: While our services are free, we do ask for your commitment to actively participate in your own transformation and to treat other participants and staff with respect.

  • Our program is designed to meet each woman where she is in her reintegration journey, so the length can vary based on individual needs and circumstances. However, most participants work with us for 6-12 months as they establish stable housing, secure employment, and build the support networks necessary for long-term success. Some women may need additional time, while others may achieve their goals more quickly.

    • Individualized Timeline

      • We work at your pace, not according to a rigid schedule

      • Some women need intensive support for a few months, others benefit from longer-term guidance

      • Your progress toward housing stability and employment determines your timeline

      • We adjust our support level based on your changing needs and achievements

    • Phases of Support

      • Immediate stabilization (first 30-60 days): Focus on urgent needs like housing, basic necessities, and crisis support

      • Skill building and job search (months 2-6): Employment services, life skills development, and community connections

      • Stability and independence (months 6-12): Ongoing support as you establish long-term success patterns

      • Ongoing connection: Alumni support and opportunities to mentor other women

    • No Arbitrary Cutoffs: We don't believe in cutting off support based on calendar dates. If you're making progress and benefiting from our services, we'll continue working with you. If you face setbacks or new challenges, we're here to help you get back on track.

    • What Success Looks Like: Most women "graduate" from intensive services when they've achieved stable housing, maintained employment for several months, and developed strong support networks. However, our community connection continues indefinitely.

    • Our Commitment What's important to us is not rushing the process, but ensuring each woman has the time and support she needs to build a strong foundation for her new life. We believe that sustainable change takes time, and we're committed to walking alongside each woman for as long as she needs our support.

  • Yes, we provide housing assistance as a core part of our mission. We understand that stable housing is fundamental to successful reintegration, which is why helping women find a path to permanent housing is one of our primary goals. Our housing support may include:

    • Assistance with finding transitional and permanent housing options

    • Help with housing applications and navigating the rental process

    • Connections to housing resources and partner organizations

    • Support with understanding tenant rights and responsibilities

    • Guidance on building the financial stability needed to maintain housing

We recognize that formerly incarcerated women often face significant barriers when searching for housing, including discrimination and lack of rental history. Our team works closely with each participant to address these challenges and connect them with housing opportunities that provide the stable foundation they need to rebuild their lives.

Through our network of community partners and our understanding of available resources, we help women move from uncertainty to having a safe, stable place to call home.

  • We provide comprehensive employment support designed to help formerly incarcerated women secure sustainable, meaningful work. Our employment services include:

    • Job readiness training - Resume writing, interview preparation, and professional communication skills

    • Skills assessment and development - Identifying strengths and areas for growth, plus connecting women to training opportunities

We work with employers who believe in second chances and help prepare women to confidently navigate the job market.

Our goal isn't just to help women find any job, but to connect them with sustainable employment that provides a living wage and opportunities for growth, supporting their long-term success and independence.

  • Yes, we help connect women with job training and educational opportunities as part of our comprehensive support services. We understand that many formerly incarcerated women may need to build new skills or update existing ones to compete in today's job market.

Our educational and training support includes:

    • Connecting women to local training programs - We work with community colleges, vocational schools, and workforce development agencies to help participants access relevant job training

    • GED and high school equivalency support - Assistance with completing basic education requirements

    • Professional development workshops - On-site training in areas like computer skills, financial literacy, and workplace communication

    • Certification programs - Help accessing industry-specific certifications in growing fields

    • Educational counseling - Guidance on choosing training programs that align with career goals and local job market demands

    • Financial assistance navigation - Help accessing grants, scholarships, and other funding for education and training

Our staff and volunteers can provide guidance throughout the educational journey, from enrollment through completion, ensuring women have the support they need to succeed in their chosen programs.Item description
