Constructing Our Future's mission is to provide formerly incarcerated women with the foundation they need to successfully rebuild their lives and become thriving members of our community.
Our Core Purpose: Our vision is that previously incarcerated women leaving prison who have a strong desire to restart their lives need to have a home base where they feel supported and welcomed back to the community and to have a path to permanent housing and sustainable employment.
What We Believe: We believe that every woman deserves a second chance and the opportunity to transform her life. A clear new beginning provides hope. A clear path with the love and support of new friends and mentors lead the way. We understand that successful reintegration requires more than just basic services - it requires genuine community support and belief in each woman's potential.
Our Approach: Professional training and community caring combined with a network of support enables our participating women to succeed. We focus on creating an environment for nurturing and growth through new connections.
Why We're Uniquely Positioned: Constructing Our Future was created and continues to be led by previously incarcerated women. This lived experience allows us to understand the challenges our participants face and provide authentic, effective support. Many of our volunteers and board members have successfully experienced reintegration themselves, and know the challenges.
Our Ultimate Goal: We work toward a future where formerly incarcerated women are not defined by their past but empowered to create new futures filled with stability, dignity, and hope. We envision a community where these women are welcomed, supported, and recognized for their strength and potential to contribute positively to society.
Through comprehensive support services, we help women transition from incarceration to independence, from isolation to community integration, and from survival to success.Description text goes here

Constructing Our Future is a non-profit organization founded and led by formerly incarcerated women based in Indianapolis, Indiana. The organization was created and continues to be led by previously incarcerated women.
The Founding Story: A group of women from the Indiana Women's Prison participated in a public policy class to talk about life after prison and what they would need to be successful. Looking toward the future and the implied promise from Article 1, Section 18 of the Indiana Constitution that, upon their release, they will be reintegrated into society as full citizens, these ladies developed a program that they took all the way through implementation.
Our Founding Philosophy: The organization was born from the recognition that formerly incarcerated women themselves are the best equipped to understand the challenges of reintegration and design effective solutions. This peer-led approach ensures that our programs are grounded in real experience and authentic understanding of what women need to succeed.
Leadership Continuity: What makes Constructing Our Future unique is that it has maintained its founding principle of being led by women who have lived the experience of incarceration and successful reintegration. This leadership structure ensures that our programs remain relevant, effective, and truly responsive to the needs of the women we serve.
Constitutional Foundation: Our founders were inspired by the promise in Indiana's Constitution that people leaving prison would be reintegrated as full citizens, and they took action to make that promise a reality through practical, community-based support.escription text goes here

Constructing Our Future stands apart from other reentry programs because we are authentically led by women who have walked this path themselves, creating a foundation of understanding and credibility that transforms how we serve our participants.
Led by Lived Experience: Constructing Our Future was created and continues to be led by previously incarcerated women. This isn't just a program designed for formerly incarcerated women - it's a program created by them. Many of our volunteers and board members have successfully experienced reintegration themselves, and know the challenges.
Born from the Inside Out: A group of women from the Indiana Women's Prison participated in a public policy class to talk about life after prison and what they would need to be successful... these ladies developed a program that they took all the way through implementation. Our program wasn't designed by outsiders looking in - it was created by women who understood exactly what was needed because they had lived it.
Peer-to-Peer Support Model: Because our leadership and many volunteers have successfully navigated reintegration, we offer authentic peer support that goes beyond professional services. Our participants connect with women who truly understand their struggles and can offer hope through their own success stories.
Community-Centered Approach: We focus on creating a home base where they feel supported and welcomed back to the community rather than just providing services. Through new connections we provide an environment for nurturing and growth.
Holistic Integration: Professional training and community caring combined with a network of support enables our participating women to succeed. We don't just address immediate needs - we build lasting community connections and support systems.
Constitutional Foundation: Our founders were inspired by Article 1, Section 18 of the Indiana Constitution that, upon their release, they will be reintegrated into society as full citizens, giving our work a deeper legal and moral foundation.
This lived experience leadership creates trust, authenticity, and effectiveness that sets us apart from programs designed by those who haven't experienced incarceration themselves.Description text goes here

Constructing Our Future is based in Indianapolis, Indiana, and serves formerly incarcerated women in Indiana.
Primary Service Area: We are headquartered in Indianapolis and primarily serve women throughout Indiana who are transitioning back into their communities after incarceration. Our central location in Indianapolis allows us to reach women across the state while maintaining strong connections to local resources and support networks.
Statewide Impact: While based in Indianapolis, our services extend throughout Indiana to ensure that women in rural and urban areas alike have access to the support they need for successful reintegration. We understand that reentry challenges exist across the entire state, not just in metropolitan areas.
Local Community Focus: Our Indianapolis base allows us to build deep relationships with local employers, housing providers, healthcare systems, and other community partners who are essential to our participants' success. These local connections are crucial for creating the "home base" environment that our participants need.
Expanding Our Reach: As we grow, we continue to explore ways to serve more women across Indiana while maintaining the quality and personal touch that makes our program effective. We work with partner organizations and community groups throughout the state to extend our impact.
Why Geography Matters: Successful reintegration depends heavily on local community support, employment opportunities, and housing resources. By focusing on Indiana, we can build the deep community partnerships and local knowledge necessary to truly help women establish roots and succeed in their home communities.
If you're located outside of Indiana but interested in our model, we're happy to share information about how similar programs might be developed in other states.

Why We Don't Charge: We know that women leaving incarceration often face significant financial challenges. Many have limited savings, difficulty finding employment, and overwhelming expenses as they rebuild their lives. Charging for services would create another barrier to success, which goes against our core mission.
How We Can Afford This: Our community partners, donors, volunteers, and grant funders make it possible for us to provide comprehensive services without cost to participants. This support reflects our community's commitment to second chances and successful reintegration.
Our Promise: You will never be asked to pay for services, turned away due to inability to pay, or have services reduced because of financial constraints. Our focus is entirely on helping you succeed, not on collecting fees.
Your Investment: While our services are free, we do ask for your commitment to actively participate in your own transformation and to treat other participants and staff with respect. -
Our program is designed to meet each woman where she is in her reintegration journey, so the length can vary based on individual needs and circumstances. However, most participants work with us for 6-12 months as they establish stable housing, secure employment, and build the support networks necessary for long-term success. Some women may need additional time, while others may achieve their goals more quickly.
Individualized Timeline
We work at your pace, not according to a rigid schedule
Some women need intensive support for a few months, others benefit from longer-term guidance
Your progress toward housing stability and employment determines your timeline
We adjust our support level based on your changing needs and achievements
Phases of Support
Immediate stabilization (first 30-60 days): Focus on urgent needs like housing, basic necessities, and crisis support
Skill building and job search (months 2-6): Employment services, life skills development, and community connections
Stability and independence (months 6-12): Ongoing support as you establish long-term success patterns
Ongoing connection: Alumni support and opportunities to mentor other women
No Arbitrary Cutoffs: We don't believe in cutting off support based on calendar dates. If you're making progress and benefiting from our services, we'll continue working with you. If you face setbacks or new challenges, we're here to help you get back on track.
What Success Looks Like: Most women "graduate" from intensive services when they've achieved stable housing, maintained employment for several months, and developed strong support networks. However, our community connection continues indefinitely.
Our Commitment What's important to us is not rushing the process, but ensuring each woman has the time and support she needs to build a strong foundation for her new life. We believe that sustainable change takes time, and we're committed to walking alongside each woman for as long as she needs our support.
-
